Your spouse asks you to stop by the grocery store and pick up a nice, ripe tomato for this evening’s dinner.

You make your way to the produce department, to the bin of tomatoes. To your disappointment, there’s only one tomato left. It is overripe, bruised, and fuzzy.

You only have one bad item to choose from. Your other option is to depart tomato-less.

Go home without a tomato, you’ve wrecked the salad.

Go home with a rotten tomato, you’ve wrecked the salad.

While this example is so simple, it is almost silly… This is what happens in business. We find ourselves in a situation that needs attention. Often a bad situation, a problem. To do nothing will cause the problem to get worse. So, we go with our only option – the equivalent of using a bad tomato.

Brainstorming allows you to create alternatives. Options. Choices. These are the answer to our bad situation (problem) or good situation (opportunity). The equivalent of a whole table full of tomatoes… allowing us to pick the very best for our situation.

There’s no need to settle. We have the ability to create the luxury of choice.
