“It’s harder to do the right thing for the moment, but turns out to be easier after all.”

My grandfather wrote this to me in 1985 when I was 16. I’m sure the context of his message had to do with girls and relationships. Looking at his words again, twenty-plus-years later, I find his words offer a master strategy for success.

Many times in my career, I’ve witnessed co-workers taking shortcuts, trying to take the easy path. I watched from my grindstone, wishing I was as clever.

9 out of 10 times, the shortcuts taken during the planning or execution required twice the effort to correct after the fact.

Ultimately, it is easier to do it right the first time.

“A Cup of Joe (Williams)” represents advice I received in letters from my grandfather back in the 80s. I didn’t appreciate the guidance at the time (what kid does?), but I now see the life (and business) lessons he shared. Read more, Cup Of Joe.
